Feelings & Friends Group

The Feelings & Friends Group for Kids is a processing group for children ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 12.

This group helps children to learn and practice their emotional and relational skills (their "Superpowers"!) such as how to "feel better", how to be a good friend, how to develop healthy friendships and how to set limits on friendships — all in a fun, safe, and engaging small group setting.

Keisha Arshad is a Registered Provisional Psychologist on the Calgary Reconnect Counselling Group (Kids Reconnect and Couples Reconnect) teams. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from Mount Royal University and a Master’s degree in Counselling (MCouns) from the City University of Seattle – Alberta Campus. Her intellectual skills and dedication have been recognized with a City University of Seattle Scholarship (2020/2021/2023), the Dean’s Honor Roll at City University of Seattle – Alberta Campus (2020-2023), the Dean’s Honor at Mount Royal University (2014-2019), an Outstanding Sociology Student (2018-2019) award, and an Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship.

Through her thesis research project and her experience working with nursing and medical students, Keisha has developed a deeper understanding and passion for working with professionals experiencing compassion fatigue and occupational burnout. Compassion fatigue can affect a wide range of professions and caregivers. It tends to be common among professionals who regularly work in a helping capacity.

She has honed her mental health experience in the non-profit and volunteer sectors, working with children, parents, and families in crisis intervention, developmental disabilities, interpersonal skills, counselling psychology, and mental health counselling fields. Concurrently, she complemented her non-profit experience with private clinic experience, working as a Practicum Student on our team in 2023. To date, some of her proudest professional accomplishments have been supporting Calgarians experiencing domestic violence and family conflict to heal and thrive, and helping children to grow their emotional and relational skills in a child-led group setting.

As a Registered Provisional Psychologist, Keisha uses integrative play and expressive arts in her therapy work with children at Kids Reconnect and has an interest in Strengths-Based, Trauma-Informed, Client-Centred, Attachment-Based, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Family Systems therapy approaches. Under the guidance of Dr. Terry Kottman of the League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists, Keisha has completed the Beginning Adlerian Play Therapy continuing education training.

Adept at navigating multicultural and linguistic nuances, Keisha grew up in Canada and is also professionally fluent in Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi. She has developed an in-depth understanding of the dimensions of diversity in relation to gender, race, social class, and age, as well as ways that macro and micro social institutions, structures, and processes influence social behaviour. Understanding each other better leads to closer connections and stronger, more peaceful communities. That’s why Keisha loves to share and grow her diversity, equity, and inclusion insights. She is a skilled facilitator of cultural diversity and multicultural issues workshops.

Keisha is back on the team as a Registered Provisional Psychologist after completing her practicum at Calgary Reconnect Counselling Group (Kids Reconnect and Couples Reconnect), where she was immersed in a variety of projects, including co-facilitating the Feelings & Friends Group for Kids.

in her new role as a Registered Provisional Psychologist, Keisha is excited to continue helping Calgary kids explore and grow the immense potential of their Superpower strengths at Kids Reconnect and to help Calgary couples grow in closeness and connection in their relationship at Couples Reconnect.

As individuals and in relationships, we tell stories about ourselves and others. As we interpret our experiences and our relationships through these stories, these stories can become a core part of our identity.

You may find these stories don’t fit well for you anymore and, as the expert in your own life, you may feel like you need to pursue change. Together we can explore how experiences and challenges have impacted you and/or your children, identify your strengths and values, and work together to write new stories that help you have the relationships you want to have and live the life you want to lead. I invite couples and families to join me in exploring what is happening between you and develop ways of communicating and interacting that serve you all well. I can work with all family members in helping each other through challenging times and strengthening your relationships.

I am a Registered Psychologist and I hold a Master of Science in Counselling Psychology from the University of Calgary. In my counselling work, I use a narrative therapy lens, while drawing on cognitive-behavioural, interpersonal, and play-based interventions. I am a certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant and have experience providing counselling to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I am passionate about working collaboratively with people of all ages to create stories you can live out that align with your strengths, values, hopes, and goals.

Catherine (Katie) Musgrove is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). She holds a Master of Education in Counselling Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Lethbridge, and is a Certified AutPlay Therapy Provider and a Certified Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) Provider.

Katie’s specialty is working with children and parents, and she has a special place in her heart for adolescents. For over nine years, she has developed her expertise working with kids ages two to seventeen in group therapy, in-home, community agencies, educational, and (playful!) clinical settings.

Her emotional exploration skills run deep. Where parents and caregivers might see a big feeling or meltdown challenge that shows up in their child as anxiety, anger, anguish —or any other presenting condition or concern, such as depression, identity exploration, relational conflict, or trauma— Katie is adept at uncovering what is going on in a child or adolescent’s heart, behind what meets the eye. More importantly, she sees the immense Superpowers within.

That’s because with her finely child-attuned heart and mind, Katie believes in kids and their limitless strength and Superpower potential to joyfully overcome any difficulty.

Katie helps kids and teens to develop their emotional regulation skills, process their emotions, grow, and thrive using a variety of child counselling modalities, including Synergetic Play Therapy, AutPlay Therapy (a neurodiversity-informed and affirming collaborative process designed to value the individual child and highlight their strengths), Sandtray Therapy, and Child-parent Interaction Therapy (Theraplay), Emotion-Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, She also supports parents to better understand their child and their strengths, as well as grow in their own communication and playful parenting skills.

As a child develops their Superpowers and parents connect more closely with them, day-to-day life at home runs smoother and more joyful. That’s when the growing up process —and the parenting experience— become fun.

Katie draws from an impressive roster of both play-based child-led (non-directive) and directive child counselling techniques that are age-appropriate for younger kids, as well as talk-based and art-based therapy modalities suitable for older kids and cool adolescents. The creative splash of humour she brings into therapy makes her sessions both effective and enjoyable. From their very first session with Katie, feeling seen and heard in an empathetic way —feeling understood, cared about, and joyfully connected with— can make a huge difference.

She is excited to welcome your child or teen to Kids Reconnect, supporting them on their exciting journey to feeling better and experiencing their life in a fuller, way more fun way.

Her graduate-level training mostly involved working with adults and she is trained in a variety of adult counselling modalities, including Emotion-Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.

Katie has continuously found that her play therapy training has supported not only her effective counselling work with children; it has also enhanced her creative ability and therapeutic skill in counselling adolescents and adults.

Katie is a neurodiversity and 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming practitioner. She is open-minded and empathetic. Her warmth and authenticity as a therapist create a space for clients to grow into their authentic selves. She looks forward to supporting your couples counselling journey towards discovering and working through your special and unique definition of joyful connection and closeness.
